The most successful project that I did was my orchid. The theme was nature and I knew I wanted to do a flower. An orchid was my best idea and I ran with it. I started out with a little slab of clay, to create a 3-D effect I curved the flower petals up from the tile. Then I used vibrant glazes to make it pop, the blue made the flower stand out more.
I would redo my dwelling project if I could because the idea is great but the execution was too sloppy. I would recut the plexiglass so the pieces would be all equal to each other, this would then make the piece less lopsided. I did love the idea though but I would try to get a paint that would change the color of the glass but would still allow people to see through it. Using marbles was my backup plan but they add a unique look to my piece and I like that.
The technique that I liked using the most was pit firing. Pit firing is taking an already fired piece and covering it with tin foil with leaves and sticks inside. I chose to put a chemical on my piece that changed the color and copper wiring that imprinted black lines on my piece. This technique was successful because it turned out better than I expected and it looks great. The clay piece is a variety of colors and has unique designs on it.
The most difficult part in this class was using a material that was under $3. I chose to use soap which was surprisingly difficult. It would've been helpful to know more carving techniques because it was overall a challenge. I should use a material that is more well known so I won't have to struggle in the future.
My animal head is the piece I will be critiquing. I think doing a bad was a very creative idea because no one else came up with it and it was an interesting thing to do. I am not content with the paint job because it is not detailed or great looking. If I could redo this piece I would try to make the texture more realistic when it comes to the ears and nose. I would also use acrylic paint instead of glaze. With acrylic paint I would be able to capture a significant amount of detail and that would add to a more realistic look.
