I took AP art this year, which was a two semester long class. It also required 12 breadth pieces and 12 concentration pieces. A breadth are random pieces that show your growth and skill with different mediums and a concentration are pieces that are made up around a central idea. My favorite time in this class was second semester because that was when we were able to do our concentration pieces, I was able to create pieces that I wanted without any restrictions. Over the period of the year I was able to grow with Pen and Ink, which is now my favorite medium. I was also able to finally do an oil painting for the first time, which is now my second favorite medium. I did enjoy this class but it would've been better without such a large time crunch. I am happy I took this class because I met new people and used new mediums, hopefully that benefits me in the future.
This is a slide show of my portfolio that shows all of my pieces. It starts out with 12 breadths, with are pieces that show your skill with mediums and your growth. Pieces that are in my breadth are ones I have done throughout my entire art career. The last 12 pieces in the slide show are my concentration pieces. My concentration is my hometown, Boardman, Ohio area. All of my pieces are places I found enjoyable as a kid, liked the look of places, or just stumbled upon.
This is my final piece I did for my concentration. I spent my childhood coming to this Mill and observing the old architecture of the building and the structures around it. The most challenging thing of this piece was adding black to it. I knew I needed more depth by adding black but my problem was were to add it. I do love the perspective of this because the iron guard rail draws you in and leads you to the center of the piece. I've noticed that the focal points in my pieces are led up to or hidden by trees, bushes, ect. I also like the waterfall I did, in reality there are mini waterfalls that continue after eachother, but this also captures where the water starts to settle. This was one of my later pieces. I experimented with more of an "ink wash" however I just watered down black watercolor and painted over certain areas. This relates to the sentimental aspect of my concentration because my mother had her baby shower in this cabin when I wasn't born yet. My favorite part about this piece was the ferns, they were easy to achieve since I just did a continuation of loops. I am also proud of this piece cause I was able to create depth by thick dark lines instead of usual pen techniques such as stippling or cross hatching.
This piece is a bridge that I have previously used but it is also at a different view. I knew I wanted to do this in pen and ink because I'd be able to inflict my simplistic style on it and capture the various things without having the piece be cluttered. I first drew the main lines of the bridge and added the trees, plants, rocks, and water around it. Then I added an ink wash to define the actual ground and added it to the two roof tops. I love this piece because it is very light and not overbearing to the eye. However I did incorporate a few thick lines but not too many. This piece was very easy to create because I am now realizing what my style is and what I work best with.
For this piece I decided to paint an abnormal structure I saw in Mill Creek Park. What interested me was the colors and the weird look of the building. I first sketched out the outlines for the building then started painting. My favorite part about this piece is the use of colors. The blue of the roof is my favorite focal point. However I would like to add more detail in the trees and the grass. The biggest challenges were the background because it was my first time using acrylic for a scenic feel.
An all metal bridge was the main focus for this piece. I first decided to use two perspectives that were in the center because it allowed me to make the bridge proportional and look correct. I purposely only used ink in the main area because it is the center of attention and it draws the viewer in. The rest of the piece is lightly used watercolor. I did not want a detailed background to go against the bridge. I wanted to follow my style which is making things clean and simple. I used a thicker pen for some areas to make the bridge less flat. The bridge in this piece was apart of my concentration because it is in the park I used to spend my time as a child in and I would pass through it almost everyday.
This art piece is a recreation of the paddle boat and ferry dock in Mill Creek Park, which is in my hometown. This was fairly easy to do but the only challenging thing to execute was the perspective because the background was challenging and there were so many things to draw. Like my previous piece I used different colors in this but mainly in the paddle boats. I am happy with this but I would like to do more shading and tie in the colors I used in the paddle boats.
I decided to do a pen and ink and water color drawing/painting of a dam. The dam in the main picture was made up of stone, wood, and metal. I liked this object because it was hidden away from people and had an enormous amount of plants near it. I used various pen marks to create the different types of plants, I later on used different colors for them. My favorite part is the various spirts of red throughout the piece. This is probably one of my favorite pieces I have done because there's so much going on but yet it looks peaceful.
This is one of the houses that was on my childhood street. I started with the structure of the house and continued on to the landscaping. The house is made up of various shades of brown. I did not run into trouble until it came to the windows. On one side of the house I decided to do the windows in black which ended up being a mistake. Then I had to water down the windows and lift the color up. That ended up not working so I had to mix the color I wanted with white acrylic to go over and fix it. The shrubbery was a huge challenge to me because I've never done anything like that in watercolor before. I had to look at several tutorials before I could move forward with the landscaping. I used a flat brush for the bushes and the trees to create texture. My favorite aspect of this piece is the brick because it is made up of so many colors and it was also very simple to do. I put different colors on my flat brush and moved it slightly to create a brick effect. Overall this piece was a little challenging and it took a significant amount of time but I am very happy the way it turned out.
